124 Studio Progress: Crafty Storage Cart

I am so excited to finally be making progress in my studio!  I am at the beginning phase of adding in storage and problem solving some of the reasons the new/old built-ins weren't working effectively right off the bat.  The overall idea and shell of storage is grand.  But now to make the grand storage functional for the itty bitty items is where I really need to apply to some brainpower.

The first items to tackle were my cutting machine and all the vinyl and tools and supplies that comes along with it.  Since my Silhouette is used for many of the projects I take on, it is really important to address storage for the machine, and ensure that I keep it simple to access and use.  In the past, I would drag everything out of different nooks and crannies and set it up on the kitchen table or counter.  Such a mess and not the best solution for a quick vinyl label or craft project.

With my Silhouette cutting machine, I have accumulated quite a few items that need a place to call home:
  • 12" Vinyl
  • 9" Vinyl
  • Transfer paper
  • Cutting mats
  • Spatulas, hooks, scrapers
  • Specialty papers and finishes
  • Glitter
  • Sketch Pens
The built in cabinets have two drawers, but I quickly found they were not enough.  I was trying to store things below in the cabinets, in the drawers and in cups on the counter.  So, I cleared everything out and decided to start over, this time with a plan.

My gut told me that a special cart that the Silhouette could sit on, with storage below for all of the accessories, would be the most ideal solution.  I don't enjoy sitting at the counter height workspace because it is not comfortable or ergonomic for longer periods of time, it really functions better to stand and craft.  That is why we added a second desk height workspace for computing.  Therefore, I was on the hunt for something to tuck between the two base cabinets, with storage for the Silhouette and all the accessories.  Bonus points if I could find something that could roll out and then tuck back away when I was done.  Or, roll out if I wanted to sit at the counter, but also act as storage when I wasn't.

I searched and searched and given the dimensions, was coming up short.  I had a very specific space that needed to be filled, and I didn't want to waste any of that space.  I looked at nightstands, filing cabinets, printer carts, dressers.... even adding in a third cabinet...

Then, my IKEA strike came to an end and I ran there as fast as I could to soak up all the new items in the store that I hadn't seen yet.  It was magical.

And I found the perfect solution, in the oddest of places... the children's department.  The STUVA storage dresser was calling my name!

The dimensions were nearly perfect, I had a 24" wide opening and the dresser was 23" 1/2.  And the height was super close too!  And would still give me an opportunity to add casters to make it a rolling cart!  Win win, load it up honey!

Of course, I left you with a vision of all white cabinets and counters.  Did the studio really need more white?  I think not.  This girl looooooves color.

I don't get the opportunity to bring in girly colors too often, since I live in a house full of boys.   Pink blooms here and there are about as girly as it gets.  Oh, and I sneak some pretty drawer liners in there too, but it's really not the same.  My studio is the one and only place where I have the freedom to do whatever I want, for me!

And I kind of wanted pink.  Just a little.

So, I pulled the drawer fronts out, taped them off and game them a single coat of oil-based primer.

The primer would help my paint adhere, since the IKEA furniture always has a nice smooth finish.

I wanted to add a little visual interest, so I thought I would play with the oh-so-chic ombre effect.  I grabbed a paint swatch from the paint store, and had testers mixed of all the colors in each shade.

The shades I used were Behr's Arizona Sunrise, Pale Berry, Deep Bloom and Strawberry Rhubarb.  Wow, I got hungry and ready for summer just typing those names.  Sigh.

Each drawer received three thin coats of the paint, the tester size was plenty.

Ohhhh la la!  I love me some pink!  The ombre effect gave the drawers some dimension that the back of the room needed.

The cart received a few more enhancements from it's original out of the box state.  First up, some Martha Stewart bookplates to label each drawer.

These bookplates rock! Just peel and stick and you have an instant label holder.  So pretty!

Next step was to use some washi tape and my label maker to label each drawer front.

Then, we screwed in some casters to the bottom of the drawers to turn it into a rolling cart, we found the casters at Home Depot.

As if the whole process wasn't already my idea of a good time, now it was time to fill up those drawers with my Silhouette goodies!

The top drawer is dedicated to 12" vinyl rolls.

Drawer number 2 holds the 9" rolls.

Third drawer down holds all of the specialty items such as transfer paper, chalkboard paper, metallic sheets, double sided adhesive sheets, sketch pens and glitter.  The little bins holding the pens and glitter are from the Target Dollar Spot.

The final drawer holds all of my cutting mats, tools and blades.  The tools are resting in the lid of a box that some gift tags came in, which I lined with a piece of pretty paper.

So pretty in pink!

I love that my Silhouette can sit on top of the cart and all of the items are organized nice and neat below. And because it is on casters, it rolls out, I link up my laptop, use it, and roll it back when I am all done.  Super simple and 100% clutter free!

And as I mentioned, I don't sit at the counter often, since when I did it wasn't comfortable for extended periods of time, however, the option is still very much there should I wish to pull up a stool because the cart can easily roll out.

The pink totally makes me smile.  Call me crazy, it's OK, it won't be the first time {or the last}.  But what I love is that should I grow tired of the color, it is as easy as a quick coat of paint to update.

I still have all sorts of other crafty items to think up storage for, such as stickers, embellishments, papers, punches, adhesives, etc... the brainstorming is commencing in 3...2...1...

  1. I wish we had an Ikea close to my hometown because there are so many things that I would like to purchase, especially this item. I could really use it in my office. Love how you painted it too. ;)

    1. I feel your pain. The closest one to me is about 4.5 hours away in Atlanta. Needless to say, anytime I get to Atlanta, I allot a couple of hours for Ikea browsing. I keep a list of Ikea items I want to either check out or buy in my phone with pics, items numbers and area of the store it should be found. When it's smaller lighter weight items I know I want to buy, I typically order online. With the maze layout of Ikea stores, it's easy to be lost in the store, just looking around for hours, so if I'm on a time schedule I have to set a timer on my phone or more hours will pass. Lol

  4. It's amaizing how adding pops of colours in a neutral room can make such a diference! We recently re-decorated our office and although we went for grey walls and white furniture, we managed to make the room pretty through art and accesories and we are super happy with the end result!
You can have a look at it in this post if you are feeling curious :o):

  33. Jen, this is by far one of my most favorite projects you've tackled. It looks beautiful, functional, fun, and creative. I too love to scrapbook, and because of lack of space I find myself not engaging in my hobby as much as I'd like. I have a Cricut machine and keep mine put up high in a closet, I think I may have found a future solution. Thanks for sharing!

  36. This is such a great idea! My Silhouette is sitting on a shelf low to the ground on my desk, and it's so awkward to get at...I may have to copy your idea and fashion some rolling storage for it!

I'm also totally jealous of your vinyl collection - so many pretty colors to play with!

  37. Ahh this is so awesome for so many reasons!! Go girl!! I love the STUVA series, too -- it works really well in small spaces (we used it in our entryway to create seating/storage & a coat closet)! The pink ombré is super cute, and keeping everything in a pretty rolling caddy that tucks away?? You're brilliant, girl! I just bought my Silhouette & need to get my booty into gear with figuring out how to use it -- I will definitely be pinning this post for future reference once I start collecting more materials! This project is fabulously creative & smart, as always!!

  38. It is all coming together beautifully! I love the ombre rolling drawers and agree that sitting at that height is not comfortable for too long. I was a little confused as I watched this transformation. The blue dresser moved to your room and the 2nd desk is along that wall? Or am I mistaken.
I wish I was your neighbor and you could come do my house!

I just found myself crutching on my love of Target and IKEA so much, that I really never shopped anywhere else and forced myself to take some time off and explore other options. I found a few new places to shop and was proud that I was able to take a little break, but at the end of the day, I shop at Target & IKEA because it is what I can afford and they always offer products that fit my style. :) It was a good experience though.

You can find a comparison chart for both Silhouette models here: http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/select-a-silhouette

I personally love the larger option as I print/cut larger objects, but you may not find a need for that size. The smaller option is more portable and can do just about everything the larger one can. It really is a personal preference.

    1. I typically always do a very light sanding prior to priming, but some primers don't require it, so it depends on the type I am using. The back of your can should let you know, but when it doubt, a bit of sanding never hurts.

    1. Hi Lindsay!
Because I was the only one using the drawers, they held up great! But yes, a flat finish in the sample sizes. If it is a family area, I would recommend adding a coat or two of water based poly, or using a finish in a glossier sheen that will cure and wash better. xoxo!

  84. I pinned this some time ago, knowing that some day I would get this exact thing to store my Silhouette and all of my supplies. That day arrived over the weekend! Like you, I want to put casters on mine, but alas IKEA doesn't sell any that will fit and I've looked everywhere for the kind that will just screw in to the bottom in place of the legs. Is that what you used, or did you have to use the kind that attach with 4 screws?

    1. Hi Liza,

We attached our casters with 4 screws and they have held up well. If you are concerned about weight and durability, you could add small wood pieces between the casters and the cart for added strength.

Best of luck with your project!

  85. Hi Jennifer!

I stumbled across your blog and am in love! I would love to do this storage for my Silhouette as well. It is clear I am finding this 3 years later, as I can't find the Stuva drawers and the Martha Stewart bookplates are not made anymore. Do you have any suggestions for either of those that are available now?

    Appreciate it!!!

    1. Thank you Rachel!

I think the BESTA line could accomplish something quite similar. They have a similar sized box/frame that you can pair with shelves, cabinets and drawers. All have decorative faces you can add to really polish it off.

  86. I too have a stuva line piece but it is a cabinet with the drawers and have been looking to see if anyone else has hacked them as guidance before I change my front pieces. Since you used the oil based primer have you had any issues with the paint coming off easily and did you sand them before doing the primer?

    1. Hi Jenn,
The oil based primer is the key, it has held up well. I actually shared a tutorial for painting IKEA furniture that has worked really well on high traffic pieces: http://www.iheartorganizing.com/2015/04/one-room-challenge-week-3-painted-shoe.html

  87. Hi there. Did you need to "rig" it for the casters or did it fit well? I'm looking at this piece on offer up and want to add a peg board to the back and add sight word rings for my first graders. Yours is gorgeous.

    1. Hello,
We actually just found the type of casters that have a flat base and four holes to screw up through into the bottom of the cabinet (something similar to these: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-2-in-Soft-Rubber-Swivel-Plate-Caster-with-90-lb-Load-Rating-49477/203661054). Worked out perfectly!

  88. Hi Jen,
I was looking around for how to store all my cuts that I haven't used and papers that are semi-cut. Anyway, I found your post and it reminds me of my craft desk - I have an Alex storage unit under my desktop (which is an old door) and the 'legs' are the narrower Alex drawers units. The middle large Alex is large and fits my 12x24 mats, large papers. It is on castors and rolls out but not enough room to store my silhouette underneath. I do like how the desk top extends over the units so I can still fit a chair underneath them. If you have any storage ideas on the cuts and half cut papers so they don't end up a mess, I'd love to hear it!!
    Thanks
    Lori

  89. Hi Jen. I have been searching for the Stuva cabinet for your silhouette. But i can't find it on the Ikea website. Do you have a link that would take me to the 4 drawer cabinet?
    Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Angela,

Sometimes IKEA changes their site and product sizes/names. From what I can tell, here is something similar:

      Frame - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20128620/
      Drawer - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90128688/
      Drawer Face - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60128680/

      Thank you!

  90. I love this! But I can't seem to find this piece for sale by itself, it seems to only come with a desk or changing table :(

    1. Hi Gina,
Unfortunately IKEA changes their product and availability as time goes on, but there are still some options for frames, drawers and faces if you put "STUVA" in their search bar: http://ikea.com/us/en/search/?query=Stuva+&_=1495299357173. Another similar line that may be worth looking into is their BESTA lines, which could also be fitted with casters and drawers.

  91. I love the way you set up your room! I tried searching for the draws on IKEA and it comes up with the loft set. By any chance do you know how much the draws are? IKEA is about 1 1/2 away and I would hate to drive up there if they only sell it as a set. TIA!

    1. I don't believe IKEA offers this specific combination of frame and drawers any longer, but I do believe that their BESTA line has some options that are quite similar in configurations and sizing. They have all of their dimensions online, but please let me know if I can help any further before you make the trip. :)

    1. Hi Gail,

I don't recall exactly, but I believe I used an eggshell latex paint by Behr, with a coat of oil based primer first.

Best wishes with your studio project!
